Gambling with Failure

McArthur & Company/ Exile Editions, 2005

In Gambling with Failure, Antonio D’ Alfonso quotes Alvaro de Campos, “I am a failure/ but I carry within me all the dreams of the world.” This is the substance of an essay collection that reveals the Emperor of pluralism to be naked without diminishing his radiance. Multi-culturalism in Canada, in the world for that matter, is no easy undertaking. The tribal behaviours that offend every belief system are still working like termites in the wood foundations of society. D’Alfonso is passionate and sometimes careless in his highly personalized arguments, but his offering of himself as the body politic is a compelling metaphor. At the end of the day, his polyglot of romance languages is a romance with language.
