Killdeer by Phil Hall

BookThug, 2011

I know, this book won the Griffin prize and hardly needs my help. Still, I love it, love its evocation of a visit of the young writer to fiction goddess: Margaret Laurence. I cringed in recognition of those sorts of meetings that mean so much to the young writer though, one suspects, considerably less to the writer being ambushed. Phil also has published a new chapbook called A Rural Pen. The opening line to the second poem makes me laugh and clap: 'Ah research — now there’s the ear’s coffin'

Doesn’t that make you laugh? Sort of endearing.
