As seen at Free Comic Book Day

Last weekend on Saturday it was Free Comic Book Day around the world (as described in my previous post). I had the honour of sitting my butt down & signing comics in front of the Beguiling with a whole wack of amazing Canadian comic creators including Brian McLachlan, Chip Zdarsky, Kate Beaton, Willow Dawson, Ryan North, and Ramon Perez to name a few. Not that I'm a big name dropper, but I was pretty excited to be amongst such talent! Unfortunately for me, I was only able to meet two of them since I was frozen with fear most of the time.

Lots of good things did come out of the day, such as hundreds if not dozens of comic fans stopping by for the piles of free comics and signings by the local masters. It was great to have some one-on-one's with the peoples of Toronto, and hear about their love of comics. I'm pretty sure I even saw our super-duper local city councillor, Adam Vaughan stealing some free comics for his kid. See, even politicians like comics!

Besides the rain of spit from the visiting masses, the weather was a bit cranky from the night before, and eventually let it all out in the form of some rain. At this point, the Free Comic Circus moved into the bar next door.

During the day I was able to capture a few sketches of some of the wonderful people who stopped by to raid & pillage the comics & signatures. Below is just a taste of some of the more beautiful folks:

Some kid who ate too many frosted flakes & a fan who wasn't sure about my Jay's hat.

Oh this kid was great - very friendly and he had a pet pigeon.

These two jerks kept licking all the babies.

Here is a perfect example of what happens to famous comic creators in public... they are always being harassed into HUGE money making deals by sleazy agents like this guy. As you can see, the comic creator is keeping his cool with a smooth Virginia Slim.
