Trillium Book Award winner Camilla Gibb hosts The Unknown Famine and Ye Wonz Maibel: Deluge for PEN Picks, presented in partnership with Hot Docs.
As the first film to report on the famine in Ethiopia to western audiences, The Unknown Famine “played a direct role in the political future of a country as well as a being the starting point for what could arguably be called an industry of famine relief," said Gibb.
A powerful story about conflict and the road to reconciliation, Ye Wonz Maibel: Deluge follows a group of Ethiopian students who launched a revolution that resulted in a brutal military dictatorship. Gibb has lived in and written about Ethiopia. She will discuss her personal interest in the film after the screening, and will participate in a Q&A with the audience.
Upcoming PEN Picks screenings: Miriam Toews hosts Marwencol (March 24) and Linwood Barclay hosts Sons of Perdition (April 14).
Single tickets $15 Series passes $45 ($12/$36 for Bloor Hot Docs Cinema members). Info and tickets at http://www.bloorcinema.com
