The process of taking a book to the screen is a fascinating artform that blends the visual, emotional and narrative elements of storytelling, creating a new artwork that is both separate from and inextricably linked to the original text.

This summer TIFF is highlighting iconic adaptations. Book and film lovers won't want to miss these classic transformations. Here are a few favourites we're excited to share:

Two Women(La ciociara)

Friday, July 17 at 6:30pm

Adapted from the novel by Alberto Moravia, Two Women, this classic film won Sophia Loren the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Actress. Loren is a shopkeeper who flees Rome to escape the Allied bombardment during the last days of World War II.

The Conformist (Il conformista)

Thursday, August 27 at 9:00pm

Based on another Moravia novel, The Conformist follows the suave Marcello Clerici, who deals with his repressed homosexuality by joining the Fascist secret police. Crushed by the bigoted society he lives in, Clerici's self-hatred culminates in a violent obsession with normality and acceptance.

The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini)

Sunday, August 9 at 7:15pm

This Oscar-winning adaptation of Giorgio Basani's famous novel now has its first screening in Toronto in two decades. In the film, the titular Jewish family finds refuge from the horror engulfing Europe during the Second World War in the northern Italian town of Ferrara. But as Mussolini's alliance with Hitler grows and Italian Jews are increasingly targeted, the family's last shelter becomes deadly dangerous.

Don't miss the chance to see classic novels transformed on the screen in some of film history's greatest triumphs, rarely available for viewing in Canada!
