The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis

The international best-selling novel The Breadwinner (Groundwood Books) by award-winning author and peace activist Deborah Ellis is getting the animated film treatment. Earlier this week, it was announced that Angelina Jolie Pitt is on board as Executive Producer through her production company Jolie Pas Productions. Nora Twomey will direct the film.

The rights to the film adaptation were licensed to Aircraft Pictures in 2009, who are producing the film alongside Cartoon Saloon and Melusine Productions, but "to have Angelina Jolie Pitt as Executive Producer on this film is so exciting and takes the project to a new level," said Barbara Howson, Vice President Sales & Licensing at Groundwood Books.

The Breadwinner tells the story of eleven-year-old Parvana, who lives in Kabul. Forbidden to earn money as a girl, Parvana must disguise herself as a boy, and become the breadwinner for her family. First published in 2000, The Breadwinner is the first book in the four-part, award-winning Breadwinner series about loyalty, survival, family and friendship under extraordinary circumstances during the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan. The series has sold over two million copies worldwide and has been published in twenty-five languages.

The film is set for a 2017 release.
