From our friends at Authors at Harbourfront Centre:

20 poets to be selected by random draw
1 poet to win an invitation to IFOA and their book advertised in NOW

Authors at Harbourfront Centre (AUTHORS) and NOW Magazine are calling for submissions to the NOW Open Poetry Stage: Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Leading in to National Poetry Month in April, Canada’s world-renowned reading series and Toronto’s weekly voice for news and entertainment join forces to present a celebration of Canadian poetry, showcasing 20 published poets in one night of readings. One poet will win an invitation to read at the 31st annual International Festival of Authors (October 20–30, 2010) and get their book advertised in NOW.

Twenty poets will be selected by random draw from all eligible submissions and invited to read for a maximum of five minutes. A jury comprising Authors at Harbourfront Centre Director Geoffrey Taylor and Artistic Associate Jen Tindall, and NOW Magazine contributor Robert Priest will select the night’s winner.

In March 2009, AUTHORS hosted Open Stage Night – the first time it had issued an open call for submissions to be part of its reading series, and the first time participants had been selected by random draw. The age limit for that event was 35. For this second incarnation, no age limit applies, but in keeping with AUTHORS’ mandate to promote new literature and new voices, books must have been published within the past five years and currently be in print with a trade publisher.

“The calibre of readings at last year’s inaugural Open Stage Night was astonishing,” said Geoffrey Taylor, Director, Authors at Harbourfront Centre. “For 2010 we’re revisiting the concept, and opening it up to more poets than ever before.”

Submissions should be made by a poet’s publishing representative by March 1 at noon. For full submission criteria and guidelines, publishers and poets should visit the FAQ section.

Tickets to attend the event are $8 (free for members and students with ID). AUTHORS is pleased to offer a 50% discount to members of the League of Canadian Poets, and also to members of the Writers’ Union of Canada and the Playwrights Guild of Canada. This event takes place Wednesday, March 31 at 7:30pm in the Brigantine Room, 235 Queens Quay West, Toronto.

Authors at Harbourfront Centre weekly readings continue through June 2010. For more information and to purchase tickets, the public may visit or call the Harbourfront Centre box office at 416-973-4000.
