Call for Submissions to Poetry NOW: 3rd Annual Battle of the Bards

Authors at Harbourfront Centre (AUTHORS) and media partner NOW Magazine are calling for submissions to Poetry NOW: 3rd annual Battle of the Bards. This popular poetry competition returns to celebrate Canadian poetry by showcasing 20 upcoming and established writers in one night of readings on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. One poet will win an invitation to read at the 32nd annual International Festival of Authors (October 19–29, 2011) and have their book advertised in NOW.

Twenty poets will be selected by random draw from all eligible submissions and invited to read for a maximum of five minutes. A jury comprising Toronto Poet Laureate Dionne Brand, Authors at Harbourfront Centre Director Geoffrey Taylor and Artistic Associate Jen Tindall will select the night’s winner.

“The calibre of readings in the past two years has been so high,” said Geoffrey Taylor, Director, Authors at Harbourfront Centre, “that we have not only had two fabulous winners read at the Festival, but appearances by eight other poets as a result of this event.”

In keeping with AUTHORS’ mandate to promote new literature and new voices, participant’s books must have been published within the past five years and currently be in print with a trade publisher.

Submissions should be made by a poet’s publishing representative by February 28 at noon. For full submission criteria and guidelines, publishers and poets can click here.

Tickets to attend the event are $10 (free for members, youth 24 and under, and students with ID). AUTHORS is pleased to offer a 50% discount to members of the League of Canadian Poets, Writers’ Union of Canada and Playwrights Guild of Canada. This event takes place Wednesday, March 30 at 7:30pm in the Brigantine Room, 235 Queens Quay West, Toronto.

For more information and to purchase tickets, the public may visit, visit the event page, or call the Harbourfront Centre box office at 416-973-4000.
