Canada Reads Announces Top 10 Books in Each of 5 Regions

CanLit at IPPY Awards in LA

On May 30th, the 12th Annual Independent Publisher Book Awards will be presented in Los Angeles at BookExpo America. The IPPY Awards go to books in 65 categories, and twenty awards are given for the Best Regional Fiction and Best Regional Non-Fiction. According to the IPPY Award website, the awards "reward those who exhibit the courage, innovation, and creativity to bring about change in the world of publishing." 3,175 books were submitted to this year's contest by publishers from the USA, Canada and 16 other countries. Several books published in Ontario by Canadian-owned presses are scooping up some well-deserved IPPY Awards this year: Popular Fiction Juvenile/Young Adult Fiction category Juvenile-Teen-Y/A Non-Fiction Mystery/Suspense/Thriller Biography Graphic Novel/ Drawn Book – Drama/ Documentary Canada–East – Best Regional Fiction Many more Canadian books are receiving 2008 IPPY Awards, including: Long After Fathers (Coteau Books), by Roberta Rees in the Short Story Fiction category (Bronze); The Nightmare Tree (Coteau Books for Kids), by Richard Rene in the Juvenile/Young Adult Fiction category (Bronze); Comfort Food for Breakups (Arsenal Pulp Press), by Marusya Bociurkiw in the Autobiography/Memoir category (Silver); First Person Queer: Who We Are (So Far) (Arsenal Pulp Press), ed. Richard LaBonte and Lawrence Schimel in the Gay/Lesbian category (Gold); and The Great Lakes: The Natural History of a Changing Region (Greystone Books), by Wayne Grady in the Great Lakes – Best Regional Non-Fiction category (Gold).
