Anusree Roy

Anusree Roy is the author of Brothel #9 (Playwrights Canada Press), as well as the award-winning play Pyaasa & Letters to My Grandma.

Brothel #9 is a play about a woman named Rekha, who finds herself sent to a brothel in Calcutta without knowing the reason why.

Anusree bravely agreed to participate in Open Book’s Dirty Dozen, an interview series where authors share 12 unexpected facts about themselves. Read on for Anusree’s Dirty Dozen, which includes orange popsicles, singing in the shower and the reason you shouldn’t challenge her to a board game.

  1. I LOVE orange popsicles. They are my absolute favourite. I used to eat them when I was a kid and lived in India. I saved money each week so that at the end of the week I could buy myself one.
  2. If I am playing a board game, you can be sure that I am trying to cheat! I have no idea why, but I hide cards, steal Monopoly money and work hard to cheat at board games!
  3. Before I start writing a new play I have to cut my nails.
  4. I am a lousy cook.
  5. I change the lyrics of songs and sing them in the shower. The Titanic theme song is my favourite example: “Every night when I am dreaming, I am seeing you, I am feeling you. That is how I am knowing you, going on. Near or very far wherever you are, I am believe that my heart is, my heart will, go on and on. Oh yes it will. It will go on and on!”
  6. I met Mother Teresa when I volunteered at her institution, Prem Dan, when I lived in India. I was shocked to realize how small she was when I met her for the first time.
  7. I have a huge professional crush on Indian actress Shabana Azmi.
  8. I have never lost a staring contest or a thumb war contest!
  9. I am terrified of snakes. Absolutely terrified. I cannot even look at a picture of one.
  10. I have never played a video game.
  11. Maltesers are my favourite kind of chocolate.
  12. I read each and every Tintin comic book in the series cover to cover before I was 15.
