Basil Papademos

Basil Papademos is the author of Mount Royal: There's Nothing Harder Than Love (Tightrope Books), which features a protagonist named Johnny Carp who is, by turns, a petty thief, drug dealer and ladies’ man.

Today Basil tackles the Dirty Dozen, an interview series which asks authors to share twelve unexpected facts about themselves. Read on to hear about ghosts, hockey and one very tough and sexy 'woman'.

  1. I don’t use colognes. I rub basil leaf on my skin. Smells better than any cologne and doesn’t require any living thing be maimed or blinded. My name’s a nice coincidence but I think I’d use the stuff anyway.
  2. I was a pretty good hockey goalie since I’m ambidextrous in certain situations.
  3. Ghosts. I’ve seen plenty. In fact, I see them often and some are permanently angry and some aren’t, sort of like people.
  4. My favorite all time job — aside from writing — was being a young sex worker. It’s an awesome lifestyle. Recent socio-economic developments have brought a lot of amateurs into the trade but as always, quality will out. And a word of warning — it’s a limited career path — like being a pro athlete.
  5. Magick. I believe in both black and white magick. It’s pretty much irrefutable in my book.
  6. If I could visit any planet in the solar system; So many planets, so little temporal manipulation… hm. I’d have to say first Venus, cuz I love heat and then maybe Saturn — gotta dig those rings. I wish we had some rings. It just so… planetary.
  7. If had to be an animal... There’s so many great choices. But let’s face it — birds have it made. They can always go south for the winter. Maybe a migrating hawk. Is there such a thing? Who cares. There is now.
  8. Sexiest woman I’ve ever been with. Right this moment I’d have to say a Kawasaki 2006 ZX1000RR but there are so many it’s really impossible to pick just one.
  9. The thing I fear the most. Other than the dark, terminal boredom.
  10. The best way to die. There are none. They all suck.
  11. The visual artist who inspires me most to write. I’d say sculptor Mark Prent is right up there, along with painter Kazimir Malevich and of course my big heart-throb, Olga Rozanova.
  12. The musician who inspires me most to write. Another one that’s very difficult to narrow down and some nights it’s the latest gay bar candy-striped dance hits but overall, it would have to be John Lee Hooker, especially his song Hoboin’. Just chock full of slinky, smoky voodoo.
