Get Lit 2008

The third annual Get Lit event will take place at 7:00 pm at The Gladstone Hotel on Wednesday November 19, 2008.

Get Lit is a distinguished reading series which highlights a unique cast of Canadian celebrities who each share a piece of writing with the audience – a poem, a short story, a scene from a play – that has inspired them to achieve their own success.

This year’s readers list includes:

  • David Miller, Mayor of Toronto, lawyer and book lover
  • Vincent Lam, ER physician and author of Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, 2006 Giller Prize Winner
  • George Stroumboulopoulos, Host of The Hour on CBC TV and The Strombo Show on Corus Radio
  • Amy Verner, Style Reporter for The Globe and Mail
  • Carol Huynh, Athlete, Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist in Women’s Wrestling, Beijing 2008
  • Elvira Kurt, Host, writer, and producer of The Comedy Network’s popcultured with Elvira Kurt, CBC Radio’s Q contributor
  • Ken Setterington, Children’s author, Children and Youth Advocate for the Toronto Public Library

All proceeds from ticket sales and donations go to The Running and Reading Club, a unique after-school program that encourages physical activity and the love of reading in children from underprivileged neighborhoods across Canada in an effort to and break the cycle of generational poverty.

The Club was founded in 2004 at an inner-city school in Toronto by the amazing Sylvia Ruegger – community leader, former Canadian Olympian, and marathon record holder. The Club aims to develop the children’s confidence on both a physical and mental level, as they train for a 5km race and work with literacy coaches, to help them achieve their full potential. The Club’s success to date has indicated that this is a winning combination in affecting positive change for today’s youth.
