Toronto to Japan

The Toronto to Japan collective is hosting an evening's entertainment called Hope Blossoms at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Thursday, April 21st to help raise funds and awareness for the victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami. Tickets are on sale now.

Inspired by the grand tradition of the Japanese variety show, the evening will include appearances by Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, Jian Ghomeshi, Adrienne Clarkson, Bob Wiseman, Basia Bulat, Jim Cuddy and Oh Susanna. These Canadian icons will share the stage to bring Torontonians laughter, tears — and hope. All proceeds will be donated to the relief and reconstruction efforts on the ground in Japan by the Japanese Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and Second Harvest Japan. Bidding for the Silent Auction starts at 6:30, so come early! Visit our Events page for more details.

The show of solidarity for the people of Japan won't stop with a single evening's event. Other initiatives of Toronto to Japan include:

  • Toronto to Japan, with Love: This video campaign allows Torontonians to reach out across the Internet to Japan and send messages of love and support. Authors Nathaniel G Moore, Dani Couture, Jessica Westhead and Sachiko Murakami have sent their messages, along with hundreds of other Torontonians, with more videos coming in every day. See where the messages are coming from with their video map, or watch them on the Toronto to Japan Youtube channel.
  •

  • Another Spring, A Renga in 27 Parts: Sachiko Murakami has curated a renga (a collaborative Japanese poetic form) featuring lines from Toronto's brightest and best-looking poetic stars. Another Spring will be published as a broadside by The Emergency Response Unit, with proceeds from sales going directly to Second Harvest Japan, the country's first national food bank.
