Kristyn Dunnion and Ryan G. Hinds to Host Writing Outside the Margins

Burlesque show hostess and author of Big Big Sky (Fitzhenry and Whiteside) Kristyn Dunnion and actor Ryan G. Hinds will be co-hosting Writing Outside the Margins, Toronto's Festival of Queer Literary Arts. The festival is presented by Xtra and will feature an open mic, poetry slam, panel discussions and readings by lots of wonderful authors, including RM Vaughan (Troubled, Coach House Books), Zoe Whittall (Bottle Rocket Hearts, Cormorant Books) and Derek McCormack (The Haunted Hillbilly, ECW Press).

From the Fitzhenry and Whiteside press release:

July 31, 2008 - Church Street is being shut down, jaws are dropping open, and author Kristyn Dunnion is overseeing it all: she's hosting the one-of-a-kind Writing Outside The Margins, Toronto's Festival of Queer Literary Arts.

Saucy-tart Kristyn Dunnion is co-hosting with Ryan G. Hinds. She's the trash-talking Burlesque show hostess and author of Big Big Sky, a futuristic lesbian love story and anti-authoritarian bedtime fable for young adults. He's an actor who has shared the stage with Liza Minelli, Lance Bass, and Gregory Hines. They're both two of Toronto's most outrageous personalities.

For Kristyn, Writing Outside the Margins is an important festival because it focuses on the often ignored aspects of being queer. "I don't say I'm a lesbian, because my focus isn't just who I'm sleeping with," Kristyn said in an interview with Xtra. "Queer is not only a different identity but a different take on the world."

This year's festival explores this queer worldview through exclusive readings, panel discussions, an open mic stage, a poetry slam, and even a children's area. Confirmed authors include Zoe Whittall, RM Vaughn, and Michelle Tea.

Writing Outside The Margins is presented by Xtra, "Canada's gay and lesbian media group", in partnership with the Church-Wellesley Village Business Improvement Association, and co-Produced by Jon Pressick, who is known for exploring the queer literary world from the underground up.

Writing Outside the Margins takes place on Sunday August 24th, 2008, from 11am to 7pm, on Church St between Alexander and Gloucester. Admission is free.
