Libraries and 'the new world'

Gardens, free Internet, ebooks, audiobooks and video games are a few of the reasons for the rise in popularity of libraries across Canada. In 2009, the Toronto Public Library system had its busiest year yet, with a 5 per cent increase since 2008 in the number of items borrowed. In "The new library: 'not just about books anymore,'" an article in the Globe and Mail, Toronto librarian Jane Pyper states, “For an institution whose fundamental goal is to give people literacy and access to knowledge, you can't ignore the new world.”
