Noticed: Ondaatje Passes on GG nomination

According to our friends over at Quill and Quire, in advance of the announcement for the 2011 Governor General's Literary Award shortlist selection, Michael Ondaatje asked that his latest book, The Cat's Table, be omitted from any further consideration.

Here is a statement released by Ondaatje's publisher McClelland & Stewart explaining his reasoning for requesting that his latest book be passed over:

“This was done as I have received it many times and felt I should not enter a book again. The GG award has been very important to me and I greatly respect it and what it has done for our literature.”

Ondaatje has won the award five times in the past, twice for his poetry (The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, There's a Trick with a Knife I'm Learning to Do: Poems 1973-1978) and three times for works of fiction (The English Patient, Anil's Ghost, Divisadero). The author has also won the Man Booker Prize, the Giller Prize and is a member of the Order of Canada.

The Cat's Table has, however, been shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize. No word if Ondaatje had requested recusal for Giller consideration in advance of their shortlist announcement last week.
