On Wednesday, August 13, Canadian Notes & Queries and The New Quarterly launched Salon des Refusés. The Salon is a joint effort by the journals to celebrate and showcase 20 of the finest short story writers in Canada in their latest issues. In CNQ, the journal's editor and Bilblioasis publisher, Dan Wells, writes that the selected stories are "not your usual helping of Can(ned)Lit; rather, this is FreshLit, a smorgasbord of almost apocalyptic richness and talent, with not an overly starched helping to be found."

The event was held at the Gladstone Hotel and featured a discussion about canon-making with panelists Mike Barnes, Steven Beattie, Heather Birrell, Sharon English, Adrian Michael Kelly and Dan Wells. The discussion was moderated by TNQ editor, Kim Jernigan.

Photographer Lisa Myers covered the event for Open Book. You can look at the photos on our Flickr page.
