Ten Questions with Cheryl Hitchcock

Open Book: Toronto speaks with Cheryl Hitchcock about her latest book, Just Give Your Head a Shake... and Change Your Life for the Better reading and writing.

Open Book: Toronto:

Tell us about your latest book, Just Give Your Head a Shake… and Change Your Life for the Better.

Cheryl Hitchcock:

My book is a compilation of practical therapeutic and spiritual strategies, with information that will help people to become more self realized, and change the everyday problems that arise in their lives.

OBT:

Did you have a specific readership in mind when you wrote your book?

CH:

I hoped that my book could transcend through a diverse audience; from the hundreds of clients that I have worked with, I know the damage that stress can cause to our mental and physical health. It manifests to create extreme negative lifestyles and mindsets, my book is for those who seek a better life and are no longer willing to live with the manifestations of negativity.

OBT:

In your book you refer to a "Universal Source." Can you explain the term?

CH:

The Universal Source is the source that creates and sustains life. All living things operate on energy, and it is found in and around all things. It operates on frequencies that seek like energy sources within the same frequency. Some people see this as God, others see this as an energy source, some see this as Mother Earth, or the subconscious mind, etc. I use Universal Source as my belief system as well as to remain generic because I don’t want to label or judge.

OBT:

Before writing Just Give Your Head a Shake, you spent years studying with monks at a Buddhist temple. Tell us about that experience.

CH:

My experience of learning and practicing Buddhist teachings and meditation was life changing for me. The philosophy of the Buddhist ways fit perfectly with what I was searching for in my life. The Buddhist philosophy is one of ‘come and see for yourself’, in other words, don’t just believe what we say to be the truth, but try it and experience it for yourself’ and so I did.

The meditation practices were the key to unlocking my connection with the Universal Source and immediately my life began to change in profoundly positive ways. I learned about human’s infinite capabilities, and the power of kindness and compassion.

To be in a place where you are truly not judged and accepted for yourself is quite different than the outside world where most people judge and have expectations for us. The inner peace that I began to cultivate and continue to cultivate is very powerful.

OBT:

In chapter 9 of your book, you discuss Universal Laws. Tell us about them.

CH:

There are laws of physics such as the law of gravity, and then there are Universal Laws that govern the Universe and the energy that encompasses it. Even though these laws seem to be of a Spiritual nature they are none the less scientific in nature. Everything that encompasses energy is governed by the Universal Laws. They work perfectly, and all of the time.

Take the law of Karma which dictates that for every behavior there is a consequence. If we put out energy that is of a lower, negative frequency, we will receive a consequence that is of the matching lower, negative energy. Karma does not necessarily react immediately but it will react in keeping with the action.

Behavior is technically described as anything you say, think or do, and this also takes in to account your emotions. If you intentionally do harm to someone or something your energy will come back to you in a negative and destructive way. For example if you steal from someone, you will be unable to experience true peace or abundance, although you may think you are receiving abundance because you have stolen something from someone else. The consequence is that you get found out, or have negative things happen to you or you lose something or someone of value in your life. I have personally seen the outcome of Karma many times and would not fool around with this.

I have seen people who undermine other people’s jobs, lose their own jobs, I have seen those who do not have compassion for other people’s illnesses or injuries suddenly become quite ill themselves, and so on. I have gone through the Universal Laws in my book but suffice it to say that we operate in everyday life according to the Universal Laws and so does the Universe. We have evidence of the energy that works through us and around us to see evidence of them. We can look at the tides coming in and going out with no intervention from man and know that this operates perfectly. This is the Law of Rhythm in action. We do not need to know how it works to see that it works perfectly all of the time.

OBT:

What do you hope readers will get out of reading your book?

CH:

My hope is that people who read this book will find at least one pearl of wisdom that they can use to help them to change some aspect of their lives that hasn’t worked well for them. I hope that they can realize that they are the drivers of their lives and not someone else. If a person reads my book and then tries out an exercise or strategy and finds that it works for them I hope that they will continue to try other strategies and understand that they can change any aspect of their life. Additionally, I hope that they will help someone else to do the same, by directing more positive energy out to the world.

OBT:

Describe your ideal writing environment.

CH:

My ideal writing environment is surrounded by the wilderness or at least having a peaceful environment that is relaxed. I am very fortunate to be able to have created these environments in my life. When I’m at home I am surrounded by peace and quietness; I like to call my home ‘rancho relaxo’ because of its peaceful state. I also have a little place that I can go to up north that is owned by my partner’s parents that’s on a lake that is far enough away from the city so that it is quite peaceful and beautiful.

OBT:

What are you reading right now?

CH:

I’m reading a couple of books now and I sometimes go back and forth depending on what mood I’m in. I usually read non-fiction books that deal with what I do. So I am starting the Bhagavad Gita and have read How to be Happy all the time, both of which were works from Paramhansa Yogananda. I am also reading Power vs. Force by David Hawkins, and re-reading The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton as well as Virus of the Mind by Richard Brodie. They may not be ‘light’ reading but they fascinate me. If you want light reading then my book hits the mark.

OBT:

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received as a writer?

CH:

For me the best advice was just to be myself and let my own voice and personality shine through in the words. Since my formal education was not that of professional writing I will not pretend to write as the masters would, but writing in my own voice and style has given me the ‘permission’ if you will to get my message out there to the world.

OBT:

What is your next project?

CH:

I am working on my next book right now. I am thinking that I will write a series of books under the “Just Give Your Head a Shake” title but with different subtitles, maybe three books like this, with the same format but different subjects. Of course they will have a mixture of therapeutic and spiritual components.
