Ten Questions with Glenda Tippins

Glenda Tippins is the author of two novels, The Simple Hand of Fate and its sequel, A Time of Reckoning. She lives in Castleford, Ontario, and she is currently working on the third book in the series.

OB:

Tell us about your books The Simple Hand of Fate and A Time of Reckoning.

GT:

The Simple Hand of Fate is a story, beginning in 1915, of a young girl, Cantly Morris who at the age of 18, against her father’s wishes, chooses the man she wants to spend her life with. Circumstances change her direction in life and she finds herself alone. She finds a home in the house and hearts of an Irish immigrant couple, Moira and Paddy Shaughnessy. Bill Weiland resurfaces some time later and they build a life together. It is the story of love, hate, happiness and sorrow but ultimately it is a story of a courageous young woman’s search for love and a home of her own.

A Time of Reckoning is the sequel to The Simple Hand of Fate. Bill Weiland, after the death of his wife, Cantly, takes himself and all his sorrow, despair and resentment away from the only home he has ever know, leaving behind the one thing that had any true value - his newborn daughter, Sarah. His plan is to go to California to pick fruit with the season. But the hollow, desperate eyes of the people he finds there reminds him too much of himself, so he moves on. California gives him a chance to rebuild his life. He gains employment and finds friends that would be friends forever. But always in the back of his mind is the knowledge that his only child is growing up without him; and he has a nagging feeling that something has been left undone in Canada.

OB:

How do you research your books?

GT:

Any research I do is through the internet, atlases and local history books.

OB:

Did you have a specific readership in mind when you write?

GT:

I thought that my books would appeal to a female audience but was pleasantly surprised when men took an interest in them as well.

OB:

Describe your ideal writing environment.

GT:

My ideal writing environment is a quiet house. I need to be alone when I write. I am fortunate that my family recognizes this and gives me the space I need to concentrate on my work.

OB:

What was your first publication?

GT:

My first publication was The Simple Hand of Fate which was released in April, 2005.

OB:

What are you reading right now?

GT:

I am reading The Last Guide by Ron Corbett. It is the story of Frank Kuiack, the last fishing guide from Algonquin Park.

OB:

If you had to choose three books as a "Welcome to Canada" gift, what would those books be?

GT:

Naturally, I would like to present them with a copy of my two books, The Simple Hand of Fate and A Time of Reckoning but the three books that I would present as a "Welcome to Canada" gift would be: 1. Margaret Laurence, A Bird In The House, 2. Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne of Green Gable Series, 3. W. P. Kinsella, Dance Me Outside.

OB:

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received as a writer?

GT:

The best advice I’ve received as a writer was from my publisher, Tim Gordon from General Store Publishing. He told me that when a book is completed I should let it go and start thinking about what I am going to do next.

OB:

Describe the most memorable response you’ve received from a reader.

GT:

I received a letter from a woman from Alberta telling me that she is an avid reader and her favorite author was Danielle Steele. After she read my books she told me that I am now her new favorite author.

OB:

What’s your next project?

GT:

I am currently working on the third book in the series. The Simple Hand of Fate was not originally meant to have a sequel and A Time of Reckoning was not originally meant to be the second of a series. The story of the Weiland family is one that is very close to my heart. The third book will be the last of the series and then I will start on something different.
