Author Shaun Tan in Toronto
Submitted by clelia on October 24, 2008 - 3:16pm
Award-winning artist and author Shaun Tan is in Toronto on October 27 and 28 to promote his new book, tales from outer suburbia, a short story collection that is co-published by McClelland & Stewart and Tundra books. In tales from outer suburbia, Tan “explores the precious strangeness of our existence. He gives us a portrait of modern suburban existence filtered through a wickedly Monty Pythonesque lens. Whether it’s discovering that the world really does stop at the end of the city’s map book, or a family’s lesson in tolerance through an alien cultural exchange student, Tan’s deft, sweet social satire brings us face-to-face with the humour and absurdity of modern life.” Tan is best known for his book, The Arrival, a wordless account of the immigrant experience. The Arrival won the CBCA Picture Book of the Year, The NSW Premier’s Book of the Year, and the Community Relations Commission Award, and was chosen as the best graphic novel of 2007 by the editor of Comics Journal. On Monday, October 27, Tan will discuss and present images from tales from outer suburbia and will give a drawing demonstration. At Toronto Public Library’s Northern District Branch. Click here for details. On Tuesday,October 28, Tan will be at The Beguiling to sign copies of tales from outer suburbia and The Arrival. Go to Open Book’s events page for details.
