Sharon E. McKay, War Artist

Share |

It's hard enough to comprehend war as an adult, but how do we frame the events in war-torn countries for young people? Sharon E. McKay, who travelled to Afghanistan as a Canadian War Artist, is one writer who doesn't shy away from difficult subjects. Her YA novel Thunder over Kandahar (Annick Press), which was listed as one of this year's Notable Books for a Global Society, tells the harrowing story of two young girls struggling to survive the realities of present-day Afghanistan.

In this interview, Sharon talks about her experience as a writer in Afghanistan and how she negotiates the challenges of interpreting the war in this country from a Westerner's perspective.
